Orthodontic FAQs

For many, visiting an orthodontist for the first time is likely intimidating and nerve-wracking. It is important that you find an orthodontist near Deerfield that you can trust and answer your questions throughout the entire process. To help you better understand the world of orthodontics and how it can benefit your smile, read some of the most frequently asked questions.

Q: How does an orthodontist differ from a dentist?

A: Orthodontists are dental specialists who have gone through 2-3 more years of training and experience, with careers that focus on helping patients improve their bite and the straightness of their teeth. Dentists specialize in taking care of the teeth, gums, nerves and jaw.

Q: At what age should I visit the orthodontist?

A: Visiting the orthodontist at too young of age may not be beneficial, but waiting too long to schedule an appointment isn’t ideal either. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends visiting the orthodontist for the first time around the age of seven. However, keep in mind that one in every five orthodontic patients is over the age of 21!

Q: Do braces hurt?

A: The process of shifting your teeth may result in your mouth feeling sore, especially after you get your braces tightened. The small amount of discomfort that you feel should subside in a few days as your mouth gets used to the braces.

Q: Do I have to stop playing sports or participating in school activities?

A: Of course not! Braces will not stop you from doing the things that you love. However, keep in mind that there will be an adjustment. If you play sports, make sure to talk to our orthodontist near Deerfield about wearing a mouthguard to keep your mouth protected.
